I toured the Battle Creek police department today. The facility is open to the public because they are holding a meeting next week during which they will ask for a new building. The current building has its inadequacies, mostly boiling down to plumbing, ventilation, and space. There is no restroom for women on the main floor, so they use a toilet in the supply closet. The firing range is handgun-only and lacks ventilation, so it periodically has to decontaminated for lead. The crime lab is inadequate, etc. I can see how a new facility would be nice! I wonder, though, if it could also be a source of revenue. We already rent out half our jail to the federal government to store people awaiting immigration trials. If we had a crime lab capable of doing DNA and ballistics, could we perform those services for other communities?
